Littlepaw sat stone-still, crouched on the edge of a wide, flat rock. The river flowed gently around the dark-brown-and-white apprentice, a warm new-leaf breeze casting ripples across the surface of the water. With one forepaw raised, the lithe she-cat waited patiently, amber eyes searching for a flash of scales. Twitching her whiskers, she darted out a paw, hooking a fish out of the river. Water droplets glittered in the sunshine and the sun flashed silver off the fish as it writhed on the stones. Bending to give a killing bite, the swinging tail of her prey caught her on the tip of her nose.
"Mouse-dung!" Littlepaw squeaked, frustration and surprise in her voice. She watched with narrowed eyes as the fish flopped back into the river and swam out of range. Embarrassment ruffled her fur and she glanced around, hoping no cat had witnessed her clumsy attempt.
