The new-leaf air was warm, thick with the scent of lush growing things. Sitting just inside the entrance of the medicine cat's den, Juniperpaw was sorting herbs. The black-ticked tabby flicked her tail, the sharp scent of the healing herbs making her whiskers twitch. The young she-cat noticed with a sigh that the herb store was looking pitiful. During the recent thaw, a trickle of water had found its way into the rock which housed the Riverclan medicine cats, spoiling the neatly sorted leaves they had so meticulously dried.
Marigold, juniper berry, watermint, chervil... So many precious leaves, wasted! I must go fetch more... Juniperpaw thought with a wince. Though the season of growth had finally arrived, the clan was still leaf-bare weak. An outbreak of whitecough, or Starclan forbid, greencough, would be devastating.

Foxflight poked his head into the medicine cat’s den. He saw Juniperpaw sorting herbs.
“Juniperpaw!” He called, “I’ve got a thorn in my pad that I can’t get out. Can you help me?”
The dark red tom limped into the den. He was holding out a forepaw. There was a large blackberry thorn in his paw pad. It stung and he hoped Juniperpaw could help.

Juniperpaw turned as she heard her clanmate, Foxflight, call out to her. Pushing the herb piles toward the wall of the den so they would be out of the way, she twitched her ears in greeting.
"Hi, Foxflight. I'm sure we can get your paw fixed up in no time." She meowed, padding silently across the sandy floor of her den. Dipping her head, she examined the ginger tom's paw with detached intensity. While she was still in the early moons of her medicine cat training, Juniperpaw knew how to handle this simple task without her mentor's supervision.
The thorn, though deeply embedded in Foxflight's paw, was large enough for her to grasp in her teeth. With a single, swift tug, the apprentice pulled the thorn free, just as she had seen her mentor do many times before. She spat out the thorn, wincing at the thought of treading on the hooked, barbed end. A small droplet of blood formed on Foxflight's paw, bright scarlet against his darker paw pads.
"There." She purred, quietly relishing the ease with which she complete the task. "Now, give it a good lick while I fetch some cobwebs."
The little she-cat padded to a cleft in the den wall, pulling out a small pawful of cobweb. This was her first time actually dealing with a thorn-in-paw situation independently and she felt quite pleased with herself. She hoped her mentor would feel the same when she shared the news with them.
Being a medicine cat is the best! Juniperpaw thought excitedly.
"The bleeding should stop in a few moments. How does your paw feel?" She asked the tom, gently patting the cobweb in place. "Do you think you'll need anything for the pain?"
